Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, India
The Combat Blindness Foundation supported the building of an intraocular lenses and suture factory at Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai, India, called Aurolab.
Today, Aurolab produces high quality intraocular lenses (IOLs) and sutures at a fraction of the cost of those produced in the United States. Many of the lenses and sutures produced are supplied at cost to non-profit organizations in 120 countries, including many projects supported by CBF.
Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital New Delhi, India
Established in 1927, Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital is considered one of the best specialty eye care institutions in North India with an unwavering commitment to providing quality eye care services to all economic sections of the society. The hospital serves a population of 14 million in New Delhi and surrounding areas and in its satellite locations in Alwar (Rajasthan), Rewari (Haryana) and Gurgaon (Haryana). CBF has sponsored the Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital in New Delhi since 2001, and in 2007 expanded its support to the Alwar District, Rajasthan. Over 7,000 free cataract surgeries performed both at the Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital in New Delhi and the mobile outreach center in the Alwar District.
Usha Kiran Eye Hospital Mysore, India Established in 2002, the Usha Kiran Eye Hospital is a high-tech specialty eye hospital dedicated to high quality total eye care for all. Serving the people of Mysore, the hospital covers a population of approximately 8 million people. CBF has partnered with the Usha Kiran since 2006. Over 5,000 free cataracts surgeries have been preformed.
Tarabai Desai Eye Hospital and Research Centre Jodhpur, India
The Tarabai Desai Eye Hospital and Research Center was established in 1986 with the goal of providing a variety of ophthalmic outpatient and surgical facilities to all, irrespective of caste, creed, sex or religion. The center covers a population of 15 million people. In 2001, CBF began supporting eye screenings and free cataract surgeries in the Jodhpur region. In 2007, the CBF Community Outreach Center was established in collaboration with Tarabai Desai Eye Hospital and Research Centre to provide quality eye care via mobile units and cataract surgery in local facilities. These mobile units are designed to screen patients and then the patients are taken to local facilities for cataract surgery.
Over 8,000 free cataract surgeries at the Terabai Desai Eye Hospital and Research Centre. Gujarat Project Sabarkanta District, Meghraj, Gujarat, India Since 2005, CBF has been collaborating with Gujarat Blind Relief and Health Association and the Shri R. M. Eye Hospital to provide free cataract operations for the poor. In addition, they have organized a program to screen children for malnutrition and Vitamin A deficiency blindness or xerophthalmia. Over 2,000 free cataract surgeries have been performed. Also, over 8,000 children between the ages of 1 and 6 were screened and treated for malnutrition and Vitamin A deficiency.
King George's Medical College Lucknow, India
CBF began its work in 1986 by sponsoring 4 eye camps conducted by King George's Medical College (KGMC). Since then, CBF has supported the screening of 47,493 patients and cataract surgery for 9268 patients. CBF has also supported the Rural Eye Care Project at KGMC which provided screening of approximately 170,000 patients, treatment of cataracts, and health educational activities. Over 12,000 free cataract surgeries have been preformed.
Bhubaneshwar (L.V. Prasad) Eye Institute Bhubaneshwar, India
Established in 2006, the Bhubaneshwar (L.V. Prasad) Eye Institute is the new tertiary care center of the L.V. Prasad Eye Institue, Hyderbad. The institute practices the philosophy of efficiency and equity in care, covering a population of approximately 40 million people. In 2007, CBF sponsored the Community Comprehensive Eye Care Center to support the outreach activities of the Bhubaneshwar (L.V. Prasad) Eye Institute.
The major goal is to eliminate needless blindness in Bhubaneshwar and surrounding areas by providing screening programs, free cataract surgery and other eye care.
In addition to sponsoring over 1,500 free cataract surgeries at the Community Comprehensive Eye Care Center in Bhubaneshwar, CBF invested in the facility by providing the center with a van to transport patients to the eye institute.
Ayodhya Eye Hospital Ayodhya, India
The Ayodhya Eye Hospital (AEH) was established in 2002 with the mission of providing comprehensive eye care services to the underprivileged of Faizabad district and nearby rural areas (7 districts) of Uttar Pradesh, covering approximately a total population of 16.2 millions. Over 2,000 CBF sponsored free cataract surgeries have been performed at the Ayodhya Eye Hospital.
