CBF organized and supported its first eye camp in Kikyu, Nairobi, Kenya, on January 14-15, 1997 with the help of the Lions Club International. During the camp, 80 free cataract surgeries were performed with all patients receiving an intraocular lens to replace the cataract-damaged lens. Many of the surgeries were done using phacoemulsification, a new surgical technique which involves fragmenting the cataract with ultrasound waves and then removing the damaged lens through a very small incision.
